U14s/U16s Match @ Frankley Falcons - Selection criteria

Frankley Falcons have invited Leadonites to play their U15s team at Bounville College in Longbridge, Birmingham on the morning of Saturday, 15th October 2016.

Because this is their U15s and we don't have an U15s team they have asked us to send a squad of mixed U14/U15/U16 players. This means that Leadonites will not be able to take every player eligible to play in this match. Therefore the team composition will be - five U14s/yr 9 + two U15/yr 10 + five U16/yr 11 players.

The following players are eligible for this match:

Pre-season Friendly Match

Saturday, 23rd September 2016

Worcester Bears (U11s) 24 Vs 28 Leadonites (U12s)

  A young Leadonites team travelled to play this season's Worcester Bears U11s YBL team. Eight of the Ledbury club’s players were making their debuts though their inexperience was helped by some excellent game management by the two referees and in particular their leniency towards certain technical transgressions.

  Tom Rudge opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Leadonites then fell behind 4-2 to their more tenacious opponents before Harry Pugh scored to even up a low scoring first quarter.

  The second quarter was another low scoring affair as Bears edged out to a half-time lead of 10-8 with Leadonites' baskets coming from Katie Dudley and team captain Sami Miccio.

  Third quarter baskets from Katie, Ben Lewis and Sami levelled the scores up before two late scores increased the Bears lead to 18-14.

  Eventually Leadonites started to play some defence in the fourth quarter with more hustle from the likes of Rich Jay, Joseph Pugh and Owen Boniface. Age and height under the basket started to tell with Ben Deards especially effective on rebounding. But with Bears up by six points at the 3 minute mark Leadonites went on 12 points to 2 scoring spree with final quarter scores from Adam Dudley (4 pts), Sami (6 pts), Harry (2 pts). Then with Fraser Renfrew-Clarke and Joe French on court and making up the more experienced five amongst the roster Archie Allcock was able to score the final basket in the last minute of the match to seal the turn-around victory.

Then it was off to the nearest KFC for most of the team...

  Frankley Falcons Basketball Club were formed in 2011 and are now based at the new Bounrnville College in Longbridge, Birmingham.

  Their head coach is the impressive James Robinson and together with a dedicated team of volunteers he has taken the club from start up to running three teams at U13s, U15s and U17s in the Birmingham centred Youth Basketball League. 

  Last season, 2016/17, the Falcons showed very strongly in their league with their U17s winning their league and their U15s going one better winning both their league and championship titles.

Match Alert - Leadonites Cubs @ Worcester Bears U11s

It has been confirmed that the newly formed Leadonites Cubs (U12s/ Years 6 & 7) are to play their first match together away to Worcester Bears U11s.

Worcester Bears have approximately 140 players, of varying ages, registered with their club and play matches at youth level in either the Birmingham-centric Youth Basketball League (YBL) or at National League level. They also have a number of adult teams representing the club at local and regional levels.

Their head coach is the highly respected American Rick Solvason. Rick originally came to this country to play professionally in the 1990s and stayed on; he is now a Level 3 coach.

This season the Bears are entering two U11s teams (an A and a B team) in the YBL and it is the U11s A team that our own Cubs will be playing.

Match Details

- Date: Saturday, 24th September 2016

- Venue address: Bishop Perowne C of E College Merrimans Hill Road, Worcester, WR3 8LE 

- Arrival time at Venue: 11:30am

- Tip-off time: 12:00 noon or just after

- Match duration: planned as 4 x 10 minute game clock quarters

- Leaving venue at somewhere around 1:45pm

This will be the first match, at any age level, between the two clubs but will hopefully act as the gateway for many more encounters up and down the age categories.

An email has been sent out to the parents of each player eligible to participate in this match.

Basketball England Membership Fees are due now

The 2016/17 season has now officially started and Basketball England Membership Fees are due for both new players and those returning from last season.

Leadonites Basketball's various age group teams start to play their respective Glozball Central Venue League (CVL) matches in October. For players to participate in these matches they must have membership with Basketball England - the sport's national governing body in this country - and this costs £5.00; all of which goes direct to Basketball England.

Added to this if any player wishes to train with Leadonites Basketball beyond an initial four attended sessions then membership of Basketball England is compulsory regardless of their intention to play matches against other clubs or not.

The above is necessary to maintain Leadonites Basketball's insurance through Basketball England.

Please bear in mind that Basketball England normally take around a week to process all membership applications and return the all important membership number. So don't delay, come and pay at the earliest opportunity.
