MATCH REPORT - U15 YBL South Division

Saturday, 27th January 2018
YBL U15 South Division

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leadonites Basketball U15 32 Vs 54 Bournville Bears U15
(Q1: 3-12 / Q2: 13-13 / Q3: 8-19 / Q4: 8-10)

A disappointing result in a crucial match but ultimately we were out shot, out smarted and out hustled by the better team on the day.

A very poor first quarter where neither side could get going until the 7th minute left Bears up by 9.
The bleeding seemed to have been staunched with an even 2nd quarter but then, having gotten back within 6-points of the visitors, we went scoreless for 5 minutes whilst Bears wrapped up the match with 16-points of their own to take a 20-point lead into the last quarter.
The last quarter was notable only for the effort shown by those not normally gaining many game time minutes.

-------------------------------------------------
The Inters squad now have a wait of three weeks until their next match - YBL Lorna Tull Griffiths U15 Cup Semi-final away at Frankley Falcons.
So pick yourselves up, lads, dust yourselves off and go again because all eventualities are still possible for this season.

MATCH RESULT - U13 YBL South Division

Saturday, 27th January 2018
YBL U13 South Division

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leadonites Basketball U13 46 vs 43 Bournville Bears II U13

(Q1: 12-10 / Q2: 17-10 / Q3: 7-10 / Q4: 10-13)

With both teams coming into this crucial YBL U13 South Division match unbeaten it was Leadonites heading to the top of the table and seemingly costing to victory at 14 points ahead by the 4th minute of the 3rd quarter. With just 2:40 of the match left to play Bournville Bears II had fought their way back to lead 43-38.

The warning signs were there for those who cared to see them with Leadonites having scored 8 points before Bears troubled the score board yet Bears were only 2 points adrift by the end of the first quarter at 12-10.
Steady progress and overall control of the match eased back to the Ledbury team in the second quarter and an eventual half-time lead of 29-20. Leadonites continued their dominance of play after the break and built up to that aforementioned 14-point lead in the 3rd quarter when a chain reaction of mistakes, turnovers, missed shots and a reluctance to drive to the basket for layups saw Leadonites stall as the visitors went on a 10-minute 19 points to 1 scoring spree.
Dark attitudes also contributed to the lost lead as players failed to face up to where the problems lay. Time outs and some plain talking re-focused those attitudes. Then the final charge, helped by the temporary injury to Bears' star player, and with both teams roared on by a large vociferous crowd Leadonites scored 9 unanswered points to take the win.
Despite the U13s maintaining their unbeaten record for the season there is no time for celebration as this Leadonites team will travel to Bournville for the return match, and everything still to play for, in just two weeks' time!

MATCH RESULTS - JUNIORS @ Glozball U14 CVL

Sunday, 21st January 2018
Glozball U14 CVL - Pool B
@ Gloucestershire College

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gloucester Saxons II 14 v 26 Leadonites (ht: 18-8)

With Saxons first team playing in the SW Regional League today this was an outing against the host's B-team. A good start to the day an a rare win for a Leadonites team against a Saxons team.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Swindon Shock 20 v 14 Leadonites (ht: 10-8)

Some emotional players at the end of this match after some disputed early foul calls gave Shock a head start. But for all that it was not the referees who lost us this match for Leadonites; for that we have to look closer to home. Some poor substitution rotations by Coach Chalkley started Leadonites off on the wrong track. Having gotten back to 12-all in the second half we missed the chance to go into the lead before Shock went straight down to the other end of the floor to score themselves. Then a tale of four missed free-throws in the last three minutes came to bear in a match lost by six points/three scores.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exeter Spartans 16 v 26 Leadonites (ht: 10-14)

Another shaky start for Leadonites before eventually pulling clear at half-time. With players making up their game time it was pleasing to see some of the newer players in the thick of the action in the second half and not only holding their own but even pulling away to victory.
Also please was the progress Spartans, a new club, have made since their last visit to Glozball.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leadonites Basketball U14s is basically all year 9 players - regardless of ability or experience - with some support from the year 8s.
Well done to Dan_H who became the 52nd player to represent Leadonites Basketball this season.

MATCH RESULT - U13s YBL South Division

Sunday, 14th January 2018
YBL U13 South Division

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Worcester Wolves Blue U13 43 vs 60 Leadonites Basketball U13
(Q1: 12-8 / Q2: 13-19 / Q3: 7-11 / Q4: 11-22)

Going by previous YBL U13 South Division results Leadonites entered this match in a confident mood. However, despite their early lead it was Wolves who won the first quarter 12-8. Not until the seventh minute of the second quarter did Leadonites re-take the lead and even then Wolves came back to nose ahead again with less than a minute of the first half remaining. A converted free-throw and a score from open play gave the Ledbury team a slender 2-point half-time lead at 27-25.

An 11-0 run in the first 6 minutes of the third quarter seemingly put Leadonites in the box-seat but again Wolves came back to narrow the gap to six points and a 38-32 score line going into the final quarter.
With the small gym crowded with spectators Wolves further reduced the margin to just four points before Leadonites finally took a proper grip of the match and pulled away, effectively winning the tie in the third minute of the fourth quarter with 9 unanswered points.
Despite the final quarter charge the eventual margin of victory does not tell the tale of how tight this match was for most of its course and this took a monumental effort from all nine boys and one girl to leave the Kings School, Worcester with all three points.
This Saturday (27th January) Leadonites Basketball play host to a double-header of vital YBL U13 and U15 matches against Bournville Bears, with qualification for the post-season plays very much to the fore for each of the four teams involved. Spectators are welcome from 1pm onward at Ledbury Leisure Centre.

MATCH RESULT - U15s YBL Lorna Tull Griffiths Cup QF

Saturday, 13th January 2018
YBL U15s Lorna Tull Griffiths Cup - Quarter-final

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coventry Tornadoes U15 47 v 52 Leadonites Basketball U15
(Q1: 11-17 / Q2: 12-9 / Q3: 14-15 / Q4: 10-11)

Having won 65-38 against Tornadoes at the start of the season coaches Robb and Davis decided to use this LTG U15s Cup quarter-final match as a chance to try out some different plays in readiness for upcoming league matches. However, with 4-minutes of the match remaining and the scores tied at 43-43 the match was still perfectly in the balance this time around.

The match started well with Hobson sinking a 3-pointer to open the scoring and Leadonites soon stretched out to a 7-0 lead with Nicholls adding baskets before Tornadoes scored their first points. But with five different scorers in the first quarter it was the Ledbury team that went into the break 17-11 ahead.

Tornadoes started to eat into that lead with two 3-pointers early in the second. But scores from Fisher, French, Hobson and Wheeler gave Leadonites a slender 26-23 lead at the half-time break.
Tornadoes fifth and sixth 3-pointers of the match gave them a one point lead by the second minute of the third quarter. This was soon wiped out by an offensive rebound and a put-back score from Spriggs and a lay-up from Chalkley. Further baskets from Calvo-Whitelegg, Hobson and Spriggs again eked out the lead to 4-points by the close of the third quarter at 41-37.

Tighter Leadonites defence saw the Tornadoes 3-point shooting dry up in the fourth but still the hosts levelled up the scores at 43-apiece. There were three more scores before the match ticked into the final minute with Leadonites just 2-points up and either over-time or a last gasp winner on the cards. The late match tension was eased when Hobson secured the victory with a late converted free-throw allowing Leadonites to just squeak through to next month's semi-final round.
